Global Warming
8.3 inches of snow on Thusday set the record for the snowiest October day in Buffalo in the 137-year history of the National Weather Service, breaking the previous record of 6 inches, which was set on October 31, 1917.
Also on Thursday, Detroit set a record for its earliest measured snow, breaking the old record of October 13, set in 1909.

Of course it's global warming, silly! The umm... warm air makes more water evaporate from the ocean, and then all that extra moisture in the sky condenses and sends a snowstorm to Buffalo. Yeah, that's the ticket!
