Embrace America or Don't Come Here!

A group of high school students in California who walked out of class to protest House Bill 4437, which would reform federal immigration law, decided that it would be a good idea to put up the Mexican flag over the American flag and to fly the American flag upside down.

While immigrants should always be welcome in the United States, they need to come here legally, and they need to embrace American culture. Those who feel about America as the students who put up these flags evidently feel need to stay in their own country!

everyone is talking about sending illegals back to mexico. b4 you do that take a look at home first and realize who takes care of your home and children while you are at work, sitting in a resturant who seats you who takes your order who cooks and serves your food, at play in a hotel who checks you in who carrys your bags who cleans your rooms and makes sure you have everything you need. yes we need to take a look at reform and laws but we also need to take a look at who helps you out in your every day needs.

Anonymous,

I understand your point. There are many immigrants, particularly Mexicans, who work in the service industry. You'll get no argument from me. Mr. Alexander lives in the same general area as I do, and there is a much lower percentage of immigrants filling the types of jobs you described here than in other parts of the country.

The point that Mr. Alexander addresses however, has nothing to do with the comments you made. He never said immigrants shouldn't be allowed to come to America or work here, in any capacity they choose (not just the service industry). What his original post does seem to indicate is that those who immigrate here must do so legally and they must embrace America as their country once they become citizens.

Flying the Mexican flag above an upside-down American flag is disrespectful of America. This is not a way to embrace your country or be embraced by it's respectful and law-abiding citizens.

If the Mexican immigrants want equal rights and respect in America, then a good place to start is by showing respect for our country and it's laws.

Anonymous,

Yesterday, when Bryan Alexander hosted The Peter Heck Show he questioned whether our country had the [ability] to send illegals back to their country of origin.

As he said, before anything else is done... we need to put up the wall... we need to stop the bleeding.

And Bryan, you did a fabulous job on the show. Very professional. I'm not easily impressed... but was.

Anonymous,

Thanks for your comments. I don't believe we're ever going to send all illegals back to Mexico; it's not practical, and in some cases it may not even be the right thing to do (example: an illegal who's been here for 20 years, has an American citizen spouse, and together they have children who are American citizens. Maybe the children have never even been to Mexico). In a situation like that, I can't see deporting the illegal; it wouldn't make any sense. However, there are many situations where illegals should be deported, starting with any illegal convicted of a crime.

Our first priority should be to stop any more illegals from coming into the country. Then we can decide who among those already here should be deported (in addition to those covicted of a crime, who should be deported immediatedly) and who should be allowed to stay; and for those who are allowed to stay, what the requirements would be for their being allowed to stay.

Finally, we need to expedite the processing of those who want to come into the country legally. If it is Mexican workers who take care of so many of the jobs in the U.S., that's fine; let's make sure those coming here legally have those jobs.

Christina,

You said If the Mexican immigrants want equal rights and respect in America, then a good place to start is by showing respect for our country and it's laws.
You are absolutely right. The really amazing (and sad) thing is that Mexican President Vicente Fox encourages his citizens to break our laws by coming here illegally!

Chis,

Thanks for your comments about the show.
